Just Quietly

I have started knitting a birthday present that is 10 months overdue. And I Hate it.

Dont get me wrong.
Love the pattern, it's the Forest Canopy Shawl. This is the third time knitting it. Love it!
Love the yarn. it's Tweed Cascade 220, by Cascade Yarns in the Cordovan colourway. A deep, rich red/maroon with tweed flecks of yellow and blue. Lovely yarn to knit with.

But together, DISASTER.

The problem I have is this. The recipient selected the yarn. And her favourite colour is maroon. And I hate it. Brings back memories of school uniforms in a Victorian winter. Maroon jumper, lemon yellow blouse and bottle green trousers. I think a colour blind man picked that combo!!!

Anyways, I am perservering. I keep motivated by the thought that the shawl will be a bit like a big warm hug. That image is working so far, but not sure how long it will last!

Might have to purchase a little bit of happy from The Knittery. Or ebay.

Oh and I am not taking photos. I just cant bring myself to post a picture!

So, just quietly, have you ever had this problem? And how did you motivate yourself to finish the item in question?

Yes. I once knit two, count 'em, TWO scarves in an acrylic yarn I hated for people who were "sensitive" to wool. I hated it. I grit my teeth and got through it, but I won't do it again. I just won't knit for those "sensitive" people unless they can find a yarn I can deal with.

Good luck to you.

oh yeah, I did a lace scarf for someone who I wasn't very happy with at the time. There wasn't a lot of love went into it and it was drudgery. I finished it early. You can do that with scarves, not so much with shawls, I imagine.

Do what I did at hard times with the steeked jacket. Set yourself a daily limit to get through then reward yourself with something fun.

Oh and I'm with you on the maroon. Burgundy is nice. Maroon is not.

If its just the colour, not the pattern, try knitting in sun glasses. Works for me with one real horror I had vollunteered (just shut up Gem, never volunteer) to knit, cause it was not going to get done otherwise. Sunnies helped.

Sunglasses!! What a fab idea! Yeah, do that. Do it everywhere. And then buy some yarn from the Knittery.

(and seriously, maroon jumper, lemon blouse and green trousers?? Although, better than brown jumper, lemon blouse and brown trousers...not that that was my school uniform, just sayin' there could be worse!)

Im with Bells, go the reward system. X number of reps, then you can do something fun. At a certain stage, reward purchase (but NOT before!!). Something good (but fairly mindless) on the teev or in your ears. Teeth gritted.

One stitch at a time.

May the Force be with you.

I've done TWO revolting tops (TOPS, people, not just scarves) for relatives this year - the Pink Fluff Cardigan abomination for my step-mother, and the Medallion Vest for my mother. Both fluffy shedding icky things, didn't like the colours of either. Dunno, just made myself knit the blasted things, and was glad when they were over. NEVER AGAIN!!

Sunglasses, treats, alcohol, whatever it takes, baby :)

This is why I don't knit for anyone except myself [and babies]. Too much stress.

It's hard to knit something you don't like. I believe that what you are thinking as you knit gets woven into the garment. So I'm afraid if I knit something I really hate for someone, they might fall down and break their ankle or something from all the negative energy the garment absorbed. Deep breaths and calm thoughts, deep breaths and calm thoughts,deep......
